Who we are

St. Barnabas Parish began as a neighbourhood community meeting group where Catholics of Haatso and Agogba met to share the word of God under the then parish priest of Queen of Peace Parish, Rev. Fr. Koos Janssen SMA.

First Mass

Later with the growth in number of members attending the meeting the idea of establishing a Church become a clarion call. The first mass was thus celebrated in a classroom of the Ancilla Preparatory school on 20th January 2002.

From SMA to Holy Spirit Congregation

On 1st November 2008, the church was handed over to the Holy Spirit Congregation of Ghana under the leadership of Rev. Fr. John Osei Yaw.

Consecration and Dedication of St. Barnabas Catholic Church

The Most Rev. Charles Palmer-Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra paid a three days pastoral visit to Haatso – Agbogba Catholic Church from the 11th to 13th of September 2015. The Bishop used the occasion to consecrate and dedicate the place of worship.

On the Friday the 11th of September the bishop interacted with parishioners. The people asked questions regarding the faith and teachings of the church. The programme then ended with a choreography by the youth of the church.

The Most Rev. Charles Palmer-Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra in his opening speech said ‘this is the day the Lord has made; we rejoice and are glad in it”. He challenged all parishioners to ensure that they and other keep the holy place of God well. He also urged each person to have zeal towards the work of God.

Elevation to Status of Parish

The Archbishop of Accra made the call in a sermon he delivered at a special service to dedicate a 1000 – seating capacity new church building for the Saint Barnabas Catholic Church at Haatso-Agbogba, and also elevated the church to the status of a parish under the headship of Rev.Fr. John Osei Yaw.

The ceremony was on the theme: “The Body of Christ, the Temple of God.”

He finally urged members of the church to concentrate and dedicate themselves to become true living souls of the physical body of Christ and the holy temple of God the Almighty.

St. Barnabas Parish

Currently under the able leadership of Rev. Fr. Julius Hayford Sunu, our parish is a vibrant multi-ethnic and international welcoming faith community. It is open to everybody. Although it is outside the main and major roads of Agbogba, it can easily be located.

We are truly a welcoming and solidarizing church. A church that values, accepts, tolerates, respects, cares for and encourages everyone to join any of our groups and societies so as to feel more and more belonged. This is the church that sees all her visitors as her fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and by extension, members of the Universal Church.
